Good Grief
908-522-1999
Good Grief started in 2004 with a group of concerned volunteers who believed grieving children lacked advocates. In those early days, we began by educating teachers and community groups.
In 2007, Good Grief started providing direct programming to children and their families. The need and response was tremendous, requiring Good Grief to grow our programs each year.
In 2012, Good Grief responded to the emerging need of families traveling long distances to Morristown by bringing Good Grief programs to Princeton.
In 2017, we launched our first satellite location for urban youth through our In Community program in Jersey City, which expanded to include Newark programs in 2019. In 2017 we also launched Routes to Resilience, a social-emotional learning program that is based on over 15 years of education and programs.
In 2020, Routes to Resilience became part of a larger offering, Good Grief Schools, which consists of four programs developed specifically to create a healthy and supportive environment for students, educators, and parents.
While we are best known for the thousands of lives we have impacted through our direct programming, our comprehensive education and advocacy efforts throughout New Jersey and across the nation have acquired notoriety and prestigious partnerships, including Sheryl Sandberg’s Optionb.org, KIPP NJ, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Big Brothers Big Sisters Essex, Union, and Hudson county, Arizona State University, Duke University, Scholastic, National Funeral Directors Association, Outward Bound Adventures, the National Alliance for Grieving Children, and more.
MORRISTOWN
The Capital of American Revolution. Best known as the location of Gen. George Washington's winter headquarters during the Revolutionary War, Morristown also offers many modern delights, shops, restaurants, and entertainment.
All action starts at “the green,” the 200-year-old grassy oasis in the middle of the active downtown. Dating back to the 18th century, when it was a courthouse square, it’s still a community gathering place and a great site for a picnic or a game of catch. The Hyatt Regency is steps away from The Green, a historic park, and just a 5-10-minute walk to more than 60 shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. New York City is a 50-minute train ride away.
Morristown National Historical Park is part of the region of NJ known as “The Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area.” The park designates where Gen. George Washington and the brave but freezing and nearly starving Continental Army spent the winters of 1777-78 and the “cold hard winter” of 1779-80.
In addition to its historical sites, Morristown is rich in the arts. Arts and culture lovers should check out the Mayo Performing Arts Center, which pulls global talent to its stage. And there’s the Morris Museum home to the world-renowned Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of finely crafted, animated mechanical musical instruments and automata. The museum also houses the Bickford Theatre and presents awardwinning performances for all ages.
Nature lovers will enjoy the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Rd.) is a 200-acre farm wher you can feed chickens, collect eggs, use a washboard and husk corn, all using turn-of-the-century methods. There are also farm animals, picnic tables and The Willows, an 1854 Gothic Revival house built by Paul Revere’s grandson Gen. Joseph Revere.
Dining around town offers a variety of culinary options — from artisanal fare at Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen to an array of international flair at Dublin Pub, Grasshopper Off The Green, Nom Mexican Table + Tequila Bar, The Grand Cafe and Town Bar & Kitchen.
End of Elm, Morristown:
At this gastropub across from Morristown’s historic train station, bring a friend or two and order a round of small plates featuring high-end American comfort foods, from chicken and waffles (smothered in maple hollandaise) to mac ‘n’ cheese made with three kinds of cheese. Elegant cocktails made with specialty spirits will keep the conversation flowing.
Eclectic shopping is all around! Standouts offering one-of-a-kind wares and treats include 23 South Boutique, Enjou Chocolat, Just Jersey, Merzatta Jewelry and Objects and the Morris Winter Farmers Market. Rather get your cardio on? Take a stroll in Lewis Morris County Park and along Patriot’s Path.
